What is Division?

Division means sharing equally or grouping. If we have 12 apples and 3 friends, how many apples does each friend get?

12 ÷ 3 = 4
“Twelve shared with three is four.”

Symbols & Words

  • ÷ “divide by”
  • / also means divide
  • long division symbol (later!)
  • × multiplication is the inverse (undo) of division

If a ÷ b = c, then b × c = a.

Arrange objects into equal rows to see the division.

Number Line Jumps

Skip forward by the divisor until you reach the dividend. How many jumps?

Division by Zero?

You can share 0 cookies among 3 friends (0 ÷ 3 = 0). But you cannot divide by zero (7 ÷ 0 has no meaning). There are no groups of size 0 to count!

Remainders (Optional)

Sometimes things don’t split evenly. 14 cookies for 4 friends gives 3 each and 2 left over. We write 14 ÷ 4 = 3 R2.

Settings

Problems are crafted so beginners mostly see even splits. Toggle remainders when ready.
